How to disclose, properly
If you earn money when someone signs up through your link, you have to say so. This page tells you exactly what to write and where to put it, so you never have to guess.
The short version
Say plainly that you get paid. Put it next to the recommendation, before the link, in the same language and the same size as everything around it. That is it.
Approved wording
Use one of these, or something that says the same thing just as clearly.
Disclosure: I may earn a commission if you sign up for ovellan through this link.
English, general use
Advertentie: ik ontvang commissie wanneer je via deze link klant wordt bij ovellan.
Dutch, general use. The Dutch advertising code expects the word advertentie or a clear equivalent.
Disclosure: I'm an ovellan affiliate and may earn a commission if you sign up through my link.
Reddit and forums, where you are speaking as a participant rather than publishing.
Where it goes
- In a blog post: in the paragraph where you recommend it, or directly above the link.
- In a video: spoken out loud when you mention it, and in the description near the link.
- In a newsletter: in the same block as the recommendation, not in the footer.
- On social media: in the post itself, not in a reply and not only in your bio.
- In a forum or community: in the message that carries the link, every time you post it.
What does not count
- A disclosure that only appears on a separate page, in a bio, or in the site footer.
- Grey, tiny or collapsed text that a reader has to look for.
- A hashtag on its own, or a single word like sponsored buried in a list of tags.
- A disclosure in English on a page that is entirely in another language.
- Anything placed after the link, so the reader has already clicked.
Do not say you use it if you do not
Writing a review as if you were an ordinary customer, or inventing an experience you did not have, is the fastest way out of this program. If you have not used ovellan, say what it does and who it is for, and let that be enough.
Why this matters
In the EU, undisclosed commercial content is a misleading commercial practice. In the US, the FTC requires a clear and conspicuous disclosure whenever there is a financial relationship, and expects the advertiser to instruct and monitor its affiliates. So this is not us being cautious on your behalf: it is a legal obligation on both of us, and it is a condition of staying in the program.
